Each November, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre provides a fun platform for men to have conversations about their health and to raise funds to directly impact men’s health in Bermuda.
MOvember.bm, as it is now fondly called, is about participation, getting together, checking in with one another and raising needed funds. Thanks to our community MOvember.bm has raised over $573,429 in the past 13 years and Man on the Run has raised $143,940 over 6 years. These funds are used to ensure that all men in Bermuda have access to information (know what they can do to reduce their risk of being diagnosed with cancer, what cancer signs and symptoms to look for) and to ensure all men have access to cancer screening and radiation therapy treatment with no out of pocket expenses.
Bermuda can participate in MOvember.bm by:
- Hosting and event or growing a MO
- Participating in the AXA Man on the Run / Walk
- Getting a health check-up or attend the free men’s health screening
- Attend a free Prostate Cancer talk and film screening
- Celebrate the manly month of men
Host a get together or grow a MO and register here.
- Host a BBQ and ask your friends to donate what they would normally spend on a night out and ask each other “when was the last time you had an annual checkup?”
- How a round of golf with the mates, set up some friendly wagers with the winnings being donated to MOvember.bm.
- Any event of your choosing - Friendly Football Challenge, Bowling, Fantasy Sports Draft, Game Night
- The ultimate manly challenge remains the growing of a MO - Trucker, regent, connoisseur or wisp – no matter the shape or style of the Mo it can inspire donations, conversations and real change. More than just follicles on your face, a Mo is a ribbon – reminding the people in your life of the importance of men’s health. Register your growth and start clean shaven on November 1st and cultivating growth for 30 days. MoBros can seek financial encouragement from those naysayers around them.
Get your move on and reduce your risk of cancer by being active.
AXA Man on the Run – Bermuda’s only men only run and walk.
November 10, 2019, 9am starting at Warwick Academy
Register for AXA Man on the Run
Prefer to move on your own, then set a distance goal for the month, and walk, run, cycle, swim or row your way to achieving it. Challenge your coworkers, team, friends and family - register your challenge, share your fundraising URL and raise much-needed funds for men’s health while you’re at it.
Know your numbers – free Men’s Health Screening.
At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you are of African or Caribbean descent or have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this conversation at 45. Know your numbers, know your risk, talk to your doctor.
If you don’t know your numbers or have not seen a doctor in a few years Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre hosts a free Men’s Health Screening every November. This year it is being held on November 21, 10 am, - 4 pm at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Hall on King Street. Learn more here.
Cancer Talks Series host a night for Prostate Cancer
November 6, 2019 5:30pm at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute
Prostate cancer has for too long been a taboo topic amongst African American men. Black men are less like to have routine prostate exams or receive chemotherapy and radiation if diagnosed. Through this documentary our goal is to change this statistic. Come out and watch this film to learn more about Prostate Cancer.
RSVP here.
Celebrate the manly month of men
November 29, 2019 5:30pm at the Dog House. Through the generous support of the Dog House and Gillette men and their supporters are invited to gather to swap stories and win prizes.
Whether you use your MO, your MOVE and your Numbers, you will be raising money to help Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre fund men’s health initiatives from prevention through treatment, so that more men live happier, healthier and longer lives.
Where the money goes
100% of all funds donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are used to support local men’s health initiatives including the free annual men’s health screening event, lunch and learn Reduce Your Risk presentation series and the Centre’s Equal Access Fund providing financial subsidization for prostate consultation, ultrasounds, biopsies and radiation therapy.
