New Electric Van Drives a Healthier Future at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre

We are thrilled to unveil our latest addition: the brand-new electric van, generously supported by BF&M and Aspen. This exciting development represents another stride forward for our charity, reinforcing our commitment to a more sustainable and cost-conscious future.

As a specialised healthcare provider and a Bermuda registered charity #070, we recognise both the significant threat posed by climate change to our community and our responsibility to take action. After three years of overcoming challenges and collaborating with several importers, the Centre’s electric van is finally hitting the road. Our partnership with Zeroe World and their exceptional team made the process seamless. Heartfelt thanks to BF&M and Aspen for funding this vital addition, allowing us to effortlessly deliver our cancer prevention programmes.

Abigail Clifford, Group President and CEO of BF&M, shared, "As a longstanding partner of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, we’re proud to continue our support with this donation. This contribution helps them adopt greener transportation, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability on Bermuda’s roads. By supporting the Centre's essential preventative programs, we are enhancing their ability to deliver crucial health services to our community. Our partnership highlights BF&M’s dedication to advancing cancer treatment and prevention."

Recent reports from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel continue to emphasise the threats climate change poses to human health. Leading organisations like the World Health Organisation, British Medical Association, Royal College of Nursing, and Royal College of Physicians view climate change as the greatest health challenge of the 21st century.

“At Aspen, we believe we can make greater impact by taking thoughtful actions today that can play a meaningful part in building a more sustainable tomorrow. That is why we are so proud to support the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and their vision of raising awareness of the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer,” stated

Adam Barboza, VP of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Aspen Insurance Group.  “The Centre does amazing work every day in educating our local community, and we are pleased to further facilitate their services and programs through a more sustainable mode of transportation.”

The electric van is just the beginning of the Centre’s journey toward a greener future. We’re exploring other initiatives, both large and small, including solar energy adoption. Although we’ve encountered a roadblock due to the required Roof Audit and current funding limitations, we remain committed to sustainability. Our staff is also moving to embrace eco-friendly practices, such as eliminating disposable paper and plastic cups in favour of reusable water bottles and glasses.

In addition to the electric van, we’re exploring other avenues:

  • Paperlite Working: Reducing paper usage across our operations.
  • Reusable Cutlery and Drinkware: Encouraging staff to use their own utensils and cups.
  • Air Filtration: Ensuring excellent indoor air quality.
  • Outdoor Seating Areas: Creating green spaces for patients and staff.
  • Streamlined Patient Journeys: Specialists are brought to the Centre, minimising multiple appointments and the need to drive around the island.
  • Motion-Control Lighting: Enhancing patient and staff experiences.

Together, we’re driving positive change—one kilometre at a time.
