Harvard professor to hold lecture on skin cancer

An assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School will deliver a lecture in Bermuda next month about skin cancer and its prevalence on the island.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre said Hillary Tsibris will focus on melanoma, a type of skin cancer, at the free event on May 22.

The lecture will be held at the City Hall Arts Centre from 5.30pm to 7pm.

The charity said she will “provide insights into the statistical prevalence of skin cancer in Bermuda and outline the available programmes designed to aid in prevention”.

Melanoma develops when melanocytes, cells which give the skin its tan or brown colour, grow out of control.

BCHC said melanoma is less common than other types of skin cancers.

However, it is considered “more dangerous” since it is more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not found and treated early.
