Charity to give overview of skin cancer in Bermuda

By increasing awareness and understanding of melanoma and skin cancer, together, we can work towards a healthier and sun-safer Bermuda.

As a charity dedicated to fighting cancer BCHC will provide an overview of the prevalence on the island of skin cancer during a free lecture tomorrow.

Azuree Williams, the event and programme manager at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, will discuss the statistical prevalence of the disease when the event takes place from 5.30pm to 7pm at City Hall’s Arts Centre.

At the lecture, which is part of the BCHC’s Cancer Talk series, Ms Williams will also speak about the centre’s various programmes, which are aimed at prevention and early detection of the disease.

Ms Williams added: “By increasing awareness and understanding of melanoma and skin cancer, together, we can work towards a healthier and sun-safer Bermuda.”

Hillary Tsibris, an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, will be the featured speaker at tomorrow’s event.

She will talk about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, with a focus on melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Melanoma develops when melanocytes, cells that give the skin its tan or brown colour, grow out of control.

The BCHC said that owing to limited seating, people were requested to RSVP their attendance at www.chc.bm.
