We aim to raise $400,000 by the end of the year to purchase a new state-of-the-art 3D mammography machine. This essential upgrade will replace one of our machines which is soon-to-be-outdated, ensuring we continue to provide the highest level of breast cancer screening and diagnosis for the women and men of Bermuda.

At Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, we are dedicated to ensuring every member of our community has access to advanced imaging equipment, regardless of their insurance status or financial situation. It is crucial that all women have the opportunity to follow through with recommended screenings and diagnostic imaging without the burden of financial hardship.

Why We Are Appealing for Funds

One of our current mammogram systems, implemented in 2008, is due for replacement. Our second machine was upgraded in 2020. Early detection through mammography significantly improves treatment options and survival rates, with a 93% or higher survival rate within the first five years for early-detected cases.

Local Statistics:

• Breast cancer is the #1 cancer affecting women in Bermuda.
• It accounts for 38% of cancer diagnoses among females in Bermuda.
• Early diagnosis rates have increased in recent years.
• Incidence rates are lower than in the US but higher than in Europe and the Caribbean.
• Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death among females.
• Mortality rates are lower in Bermuda compared to the US, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The new 3D digital mammography equipment offers the latest in diagnostic accuracy with a patient-focused design, ensuring comfort and efficiency. This advanced technology will reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for care and minimise costs.
